Was the Coronavirus Pandemic Foretold in the Stars?

2020 looked to be an interesting astrological year for many reasons, with several rare planetary conjunctions conspiring together to begin a new astrological era. On an individual level, 2020’s planetary unions were all about letting go and allowing us to reprioritize what was important, both to us as individuals, and to us on a global scale.

Marking the end of one decade and the beginning of another, the astrological conjunctions in 2020 foresaw a shift to a new paradigm that would force us to tackle the challenges that we face in our everyday lives and others that face civilization as a whole. We knew the planet was struggling and the systems that had been in place for the last few generations had reached breaking capacity. We knew that the transition to a new way of living was going to be a difficult and turbulent one, for every zodiac sign and every person on the planet. But, we didn’t know it would be quite so visceral.

2020: The Year of Change

One of the few constants in this world, change is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy, especially with the way the world is going at the moment, with the devastating fires in Australia, the locust plagues in Africa, and now the Coronavirus which is sweeping across the world at an unprecedented rate, leaving a trail of panic and pandemonium in its wake.

So, although we couldn’t foresee something quite so devastating happening before now, with the benefit of hindsight we wondered if it was possible to have foretold this in the stars.

December 2019 to January 2020

One of the biggest astrological events of the year was the conjunction of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn on January 12th. Although they had been in close contact since early December 2019, this was the first time these two planets had joined in Capricorn for over 500 years.

Saturn & Pluto in Capricorn

The historical alignment of Saturn & Pluto in Capricorn had been a long time coming. Kicking off 2020 with a bang, it was predicted to bring with it a big shakeup affecting international relations and the global economy on a grand scale, whilst also affecting our relationships on a more localized level. As the planets moved into the sign of Capricorn, it was also predicted that this would affect typical Sea-Goat traits, like power, organization, government, and financial affairs.

Sounds pretty apt, hey?

So let’s look into this a little further. In 2019, the world experienced a lot of social changes, that started with challenging long-held beliefs and shifted into a big transformation in the way we viewed the world. From capitalism to climate change, nothing was safe from our critical lens, and this current crisis feels like a culmination of all of those things, topped off with an unsustainable lifestyle where the majority of the world dedicated all their energy to work and materialistic dreams, with family, relationships, and hobbies taking a backseat.

February 2020: Mercury Retrograde

Moving into February, we went into the first period of Mercury Retrograde in 2020. Normally a period to take a backseat and hold off on any big decisions – especially after such a turbulent start to the year – this could have something to do with how COVID-19 was able to spread through the world unchecked. With just a few cases of the Coronavirus confirmed outside of China up until then, it was still business as usual around most of the globe, with travel and global trade operating as it always had.

March 2020

By March 10th, when Mercury transitioned out of retrograde, the damage had already been done. It was around this time when the rest of the world started to see the impact of COVID-19, and how the Coronavirus had spread unchecked through the population, overwhelming medical systems around the world. Usually, this would be a time when people would feel spurred into action after a period of rest, but now, some people are being forced into action and others are being urged to stay home for the good of the population.

So, What Next?

The next big planetary conjunction in 2020 is the conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto on April 4th. Combined with the recent alignment of Mars, Jupiter, and Pluto in Capricorn and Saturn in Aquarius on March 20th and 21st respectively, there is a huge build-up of astrological energy moving around the atmosphere at the moment. These alignments promote a big picture way of thinking, while the conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto is a very positive one, signifying regeneration and healing.

Jupiter & Pluto in Capricorn

Although the conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto isn’t rare, the chances of it occurring three times in one year is. However, with the way that the world is going at the moment, it feels like this is the star’s way of sending their healing vibes to the world and telling us that although things are tough right now, they will get better. These planets will also align on June 30th and November 12th, bringing their regenerative powers to the world when we will need it most.

Weathering the Storm

Of course, for those who have lost loved ones or who are sick or struggling through the anxiety, who are suffering through quarantine, job losses, and massive uncertainty in the world, this doesn’t make it any easier. COVID-19 is the biggest threat to lives and livelihoods that most people have experienced in their lifetimes, and without an end in sight, it feels like the turbulence is only just beginning.

However, as we move through the rest of this crazy year, we all need to try to keep as grounded as possible. Periods of Venus Retrograde, Mercury Retrograde, and Mars Retrograde will provide global downtime to reflect, but we will all need to try and unite for the greater good. Although it will be a struggle, even the air, fire, and water signs will need to try to keep their heads in the game and allow their cooler, logical, earthy traits to take over, rather than being led by fear and emotions.

The End? December 2020

The astrological year will end with one final planetary conjunction – the union of Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius on December 21st. Over 180 years in the making, this dramatic conjunction will lead to a big crescendo for 2020, allowing us – and the world – the opportunity to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of the year and the decades before.

Jupiter & Saturn in Aquarius

According to astrologers, Jupiter and Saturn are the great rulers of history – the Choronocators – which has long signified that 2020 would be the year that we would rewrite history. As these planets move into the air element, this should also signify a social shift from materialism and a renewed focus on the importance of information, new ideas, equality, and nature.

Hopefully, by then, the worst will all be over and we’ll all be waking up to the dawn of a new world, and the end of one of the most challenging times in modern history. For now, we’re sending all our love and best wishes to the world and urging everyone to stay home and stay safe. After all, we’re all in this together – and the only way out of it is to work together too.
